Glacier Express route tour from Lucerne (on local trains)

Discover the Glacier Express route on a day trip from Lucerne. On this tour we are using local trains which run on the same tracks and route as the Glacier Express.

Route: Lucerne - Zurich - Chur - Disentis/Mustér - Andermatt - Brig - Bern or Olten - Lucerne

The Glacier Express route runs from St. Moritz to Zermatt, which takes 8,5 hours. We can not do the entire route on a day tour from Lucerne, however, we can cover four and half hours and some of the most scenic bits of the route.

From Lucerne we travel via Zurich to Chur. There we join the Glacier Express route and travel through the Rhine Gorge and over the Oberalppass to Andermatt and via the Furka tunnel to Brig, where we leave the Glacier Express route, and return via the Lötschberg base tunnel and Bern back to Lucerne.

Highlights

  • Travel as locals do, on regional trains through the mountains

  • Cover a lot of distance: You get to see a lot of Switzerland

  • Scenic parts of the Glacier Express route (Rhine Gorge & Oberalppass)

  • A spectacular train ride through Switzerland

  • Visit the village of Andermatt

Please regard on this tour we use the local trains which run on the same route as the Glacier Express.

I don’t offer the tour option on the panoramic (tourist) train anymore, due to a lack of reservable seats, and as I’m not satisfied with the on-board experience and service. To see how the local trains compare to the panoramic train, open the ‘differences’ tab below.

  • Differences: local trains vs. panoramic trains

Benefits of the local trains vs. the Glacier Express panoramic train

    + Authentic experience

+ The local trains take the same route as the Glacier Express

+ The local trains also offer comfortable seats and have a 1st class compartment.

+ More space - on the Glacier Express every single seat is taken and you are limited to the seat which you have reserved. The local trains often have an occupancy rate of 60% or less, however this can't be guaranteed.

+ The local trains have open seating, you can sit on every free seat. Given availability, you can always switch sides and select a seat on the side with the best views.

+ No panoramic windows - The panoramic windows are larger but cause a lot of glare, hence it's better for photography.

+ A lower tour price - Unlike for the Glacier Express panoramic train, there is no surcharge for the local trains.

Downsides of the local trains vs. the Glacier Express panoramic train

    - There is no food and beverage service on board - however you can buy snacks, sandwiches and drinks at the train station pre-boarding, and consume it on board.

    - No panoramic windows - however the regular windows are still large enough to provide a good view of the scenery.

    - More changes of trains. The changes are easy, on most stations the corresponding train is just on the opposite platform. This is only an issue if some of the participants have mobility issues.
